Sudbury to the Sea - 24 Miles to Raise Money for St Nicholas Hospice
by Mr C Ryall - Thursday, September 4 2008, 07:46 PM
CanoeLaura Osborne, an intrepid English teacher here at Great Cornard Upper School, is going to canoe from Sudbury to the Sea. The journey will take place on the weekend starting the 13 September 2008 and is to raise money for St Nicholas Hospice.

As well as two teachers dying recently, several members of staff have also had family members die of cancer. We hope that the money Laura raises will be able to support other people suffering from illness, and also help their families.

St Nicholas HospiceSt Nicholas Hospice provides specialist medical care to patients with life threatening illnesses in the Sudbury & Bury St Edmunds area.

If you would like to sponsor Laura online (it can be a very small amount) please visit http://justgiving.com/sudburytothesea. Alternatively you can collect a sponsorship form from school, or if you wish bring money to reception.

Good luck Laura, and Tim & Mick (our caretakers) who will be rowing alongside her.

PRESS RELEASE
PAUL DAINTY

It is with great sadness that the school announces the death of Paul Dainty, aged 55, on Tuesday 12th August. Paul was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at the end of July and died following a short illness.

Paul had taught at the school since 1978, having spent short periods of time in ILEA and at the Bramston School in Essex. He joined the PE Department and went on to become Head of PE and Performing Arts. During this period he was responsible for several innovations – changes to the national curriculum, introduction of examination courses in PE, Sports Leaders Award, the development of new community links with the local hockey, rugby, cricket and golf clubs and the introduction of Open Learning Week. He oversaw the development of several talented sportsmen and women at school, club, county, national and international levels. He was instrumental in developing new facilities such as the climbing wall and the astro-pitch.

He himself was a talented sportsman and coach in a variety of areas – canoeing, hockey, mountaineering and climbing, athletics, basketball, skiing, volleyball, trampolining and golf. He was Chairman of Suffolk Schools and helped to develop a new breed of talented young golfers in Suffolk including his own two sons – Simon and Tim.

In recent years Paul taught science and developed his leadership role, taking responsibility for cover, examinations and trips and visits. Most recently, he was working on the Government’s new 14-19 reforms and developing his interest in the curriculum.

Mike Foley, Headteacher, has offered Paul’s family his deepest condolences on behalf of the school community, both past and present. He said: “Paul was highly respected by staff and students. He has had a profound impact on the way the school has developed over the past 30 years, and during that time he has inspired thousands of students. His untimely death has left us in shock and he will be sadly missed.”

The school has been informed that the funeral service will take place on Thursday 28th August (2.00pm) at Colchester Crematorium.
